A knight out: Uffington marks Attenborough’s centenary in scarecrow style

7 May 2026 | News

If you ventured around Uffington over the bank holiday weekend, you may have done a double-take at some of the residents on display. This year’s Scarecrow Trail leaned heavily into one theme – the 100th birthday of Sir David Attenborough – and the village rose to the occasion with characteristic enthusiasm. Many happy returns, Sir David, from all of us in Uffington!

A slightly-more-portable Sir David made his rounds in the company of Nick Kimberley, who was spotted escorting the great naturalist into The Bertie Arms for what we can only assume was a well-earned pint. The cutout proved rather more cooperative than the real Sir David might have been at 100 – though sadly less informative about the local fauna. We have it on good authority that he was a model guest and didn’t once try to narrate the bar staff.

Not all the headlines were strictly Attenborough-themed, however. Nina Brittain has shared the news that her famous elephant scarecrow (the one that has been merrily squirting water at unsuspecting passers-by for some time now) is being given a glorious second act on the stage. He has been signed up for the Junior production of Aladdin at the Corn Exchange, and is then off to Malcolm Sargent School for a turn in The Lion King. A career trajectory most working actors would happily trample for.

Huge thanks, as ever, to everyone who took part, voted, donated, or simply wandered around grinning. Same time next year, please – and once again, a very happy 100th to Sir David.
