Call the Ladies: A harmonious year in review

2 December 2024 | News

As 2024 draws to a close, Susannah Christou, organiser of the much-loved “Call the Ladies” choir, reflects on an uplifting year of song and camaraderie.

Since its first session in April, this choir for local women has become a cherished oasis of music, relaxation, and connection. Over the past months, participants have taken time out of their busy lives to breathe, stretch, sing, and share a warm cup of tea or coffee together.

Despite occasional hiccups with technology, the group has built a beautiful repertoire, learning songs such as:

  • Lean on Me
  • The Rose by Bette Midler
  • Deep River
  • A Thousand Years
  • Chattanooga Choo Choo
  • Danny Boy
  • The Trolley Song
  • Colours of the Wind
  • The Power in the Music

Positive feedback from members

Participants have shared glowing feedback, highlighting the choir’s mix of music, mindfulness, and social connection:

  • “I have enjoyed it so far – I like the breathing exercises and also the music.”
  • “Enjoyed the singing and the social aspect.”
  • “I liked the meditation and physical warm-ups.”
  • “It’s good fun!”

Special thanks

A heartfelt thank-you goes to Barbara Tomlinson, who brought her wonderful piano skills to the group’s final session at Casewick Chapel, adding an extra touch of magic to their music-making. Gratitude also goes to Mary Johnston, whose tea and refreshments were a welcome weekly treat.

The group is also thankful for the support of the “Hey Uffington” scheme, which enabled sessions to take place in the lovely Uffington Village Hall before moving to the atmospheric Casewick Chapel, where access to a piano enhanced the experience.

One of the year’s highlights was the choir’s debut performance at Musicake24, where their hard work and harmonious spirit shone brightly.

Looking ahead

“Call the Ladies” will take a winter break but will return in spring 2025, ready for another season of song and togetherness. Whether you’re a seasoned singer or just curious to try something new, everyone is welcome to join this uplifting group when sessions resume.

For now, here’s to a successful first year and many more to come! 🎶
