Scarecrow Festival Goes “On Air” with a BBC Bonanza!

11 February 2024 | News

Welcome, Uffington residents and friends from afar! Get ready to set your dials to “fun” because our beloved Scarecrow Festival is back with a bang on the 5th & 6th of May, from 11am to 4pm, and this year’s theme is one for the history books: “A Celebration of the BBC”. Yes, you heard right! We’re inviting everyone to step into the world of television, with scarecrows inspired by everything from the adventurous realms of Doctor Who to the dazzling dance floor of Strictly Come Dancing, and maybe even a peek into the Blue Peter garden!

Last year, our uniquely charming event caught the attention of British astronaut Tim Peake, and this year, we’re dialing up the creativity to broadcast our community spirit and ingenuity. Imagine strolling through the village and spotting scarecrows resembling beloved newsreaders, iconic sitcom characters, or tributes to the groundbreaking documentaries that have shaped our understanding of the world.

As you meander through our picturesque village, expect to be greeted by an array of scarecrows nestled in gardens, peeking from hedgerows, and standing guard in school and church grounds. But the festival is more than just a scarecrow showcase! Embark on a quiz trail designed with questions to entertain the adults and delight the kids, guiding you to discover all the creative installations.

And, because no festival is complete without a feast for the senses, we’ve got stalls laden with treats, refreshing drinks, and games to keep spirits high. It’s a celebration of British television, community, and fun — all rolled into one fantastic weekend.

For the tiny admission of £5 per car, you gain access to parking, the festival itself, a quiz sheet, and a village map — everything you need for a day packed with adventure and discovery. If you’re joining us on foot, a quiz sheet can be yours for just £2.50, with no parking worries. Best of all, every penny we raise will be channeled back into our village, supporting vital causes like the upkeep of our beautiful thatched village hall, the local church, school, and cricket club. It’s our way of ensuring that Uffington remains a wonderful place to live and visit.

So circle the dates, 5th & 6th May, from 11am to 4pm, on your calendar, and get ready for a festival that promises fun, laughter, and a little friendly competition. Let’s celebrate the BBC and our unique village spirit in the grandest way possible — with creativity, community, and a countryside full of scarecrows! See you there!

More information will be added soon to our event page Scarecrows 2024 where you can also find a selection of photos from last year’s event.
